My two favorite characters are: 慧 huì(Wisdom
德 dé (Virtue)

Since the story is about an old wise man — the obvious character to complement this story is the character for wisdom. The actual compound for wisdom is: 智慧 zhìhuì Zhì = wisdom, resourcefulness, wit, Huì = intelligent, bright.
